1. What is considered high-strength CBD oil?

A high-strength CBD oil is any oil that has 25% or more concentration of cannabidiol relative to the amount of carrier oil. Oils with a concentration between 10% and 25% are medium strength and those below 10% are considered low strength.

For example, 1000mg of CBD may seem like a large amount, but in a 10ml bottle the concentration is only 10% CBD. When you look for high-strength products you may find oils with a strength between 25% and 50%:

• A 50% CBD oil in a 10ml bottle will contain 5000mg of CBD.
• A 30% CBD oil in a 10ml bottle will contain 3000mg of CBD.

In other CBD products, different concentrations can be considered high strength because of the intensity of the effect they produce. For instance, e-liquids can be considered strong if they are 10% or higher.

No small measures – If you opt for an oil that delivers a large amount of CBD in one drop, such as 15mg (30% strength) to 25mg (50%). This will always be the smallest measure you can take. If you decide you want to reduce your intake you won’t be able to go below that one drop serving. So, if your requirements are less than this you could be spending more than you need to.

4. How to take a high-strength CBD oil

CBD affects each person differently, for some people a small amount of CBD provides the effects they seek, but others may need to gradually work towards taking larger servings.

Those who prefer to consume high-strength CBD often start with 30-60mg per day for a week. After that, they continue taking 45-90mg per day and increase or decrease the measure or frequency as required.

You should note that CBD is “biphasic”. A biphasic substance is one that can have two differing effects depending on the amount consumed. Alcohol is an excellent example of a biphasic substance. In small amounts it can make you happy and more outgoing but if you consume too much it can leave you feeling depressed and anxious.

So, if you find you are taking CBD in increasing amounts, but the effect is different to before, it could be because you are taking too much. Rather than then increasing the amount of CBD to get the same effect you may have more success by reducing it.

The most effective way to take oil or tinctures is to place them under your tongue to be absorbed sublingually. This allows them to be absorbed via the blood vessels and membrane under your tongue. After 1-2 minutes, wash the oil down with a glass of water. To boost absorption (bioavailability), follow with food that contains at least a little bit of fat such as oil or butter.

5. Precautions

CBD is generally well tolerated but, in some cases, can produce side effects. The most common potential side effects of taking CBD include a dry mouth, gastrointestinal problems and changes in appetite. When taken in large servings, the risk of more serious symptoms is greater; these can include low blood pressure, dizziness, headaches and liver toxicity.

CBD interacts with several commonly prescribed drugs producing unexpected results or negative effects. There are lots of medications that should not be taken with CBD, some of the main types include anti-coagulants, anti-convulsants, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungals and beta-blockers.

To minimise side effects the Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends a daily amount of no more than 70mg of CBD per day. They also advise that it should not be used if you’re taking medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Why is high-strength CBD expensive?

High-strength CBD products contain more cannabidiol and less additional ingredients such as carrier oils. The CBD is the most valuable ingredient because of costs incurred during the farming of the hemp and the manufacture of the final product. These are driven up by the value of the raw materials, procedures to ensure that it’s produced legally, and the sophisticated equipment required to extract it from the hemp.

This cost increase gets passed on to the customer resulting in a more expensive product because of the high concentration of CBD. However, in most cases, high-strength CBD gives you more of the active ingredient for your money, making it the most economical way to buy it.
